Buy IONQ.  Buy at least one large cap tech ETF to get a piece of all the big tech companies.

Then buy QTUM, and periodically review its underlying holdings to discover if there are any other companies you want to go heavier on.

A couple of considerations: 

1. If you want to make the most leveraged investment in quantum computers, you are limited to the smaller, pure-play, public companies, of which here are very few. MSFT and Alphabet and IBM may well be better bets to be the (or a) quantum-computer winner, but quantum revenues won't even double their stock price. 
2. I believe AI will be much bigger than quantum, and it's already producing value (and profits) while quantum computing is not.  I like the quantum opportunity but I don't expect it to be as big a deal as AI.  That doesn't mean AI is the better investment, since competition is fierce and it's not clear who -- what companies or even industries--will be able to get the most profit from it. But it does mean that investors have a lot of shiny-looking investment opportunities in AI, which is likely already draining some potential investment dollars from quantum. 
3. To be clear: no one knows which approach to quantum computer hardware will survive. Also, even with more capable hardware, it is not yet clear that quantum algorithms will be invented (discovered?) that will deliver the promised "quantum advantage" in important commercial applications. In other words, this is not a place you should make a big bet with all your retirement savings.

One of the bigger issues is with encryption. The fear is that QC will make current encryption algorithms useless. Biden put out an executive order a while ago pushing agencies to get moving on this. CISA is expected to publish quantum resistant algorithms for this year. Someone (some fed contractors) are going to get paid a lot to help implement them across the gov. And private companies are going to have to do the same if they want to keep their data safe.

All I can say is I got a recruitment email from them this morning. I am absolutely unqualified for the job, no desire to move to Sili Valley, and the person's English and attention to detail is seriously lacking. The get in the 3+ range on jobs sites, but I haven't checked yet to see if there are a bunch of sock puppets who get paid to make glowing reviews. I'm not replying so I don't need to investigate further, but if you're considering it, I'd check their reviews on several Jobs websites.

Good post. Chinese literacy rate(especially the female literacy rate) was way higher at the end of Cold war and that helped them tap into the opportunities presented by rising globalization. While I admire China for the economic progress, I do think we should be careful in comparing ourselves to them. Our strengths are demography and relatively better relations with most of the world(west, middle east etc.). Improving education and rule of law should be our focus going forward.

Just saying that the main reason China is able to build such systems is because it has a strong authoritarian state (with a majority of the population belonging to a single tribe and single language) which enforces law and order and creates a high trust society.

I work in quantum computing. I have some pretty strong advice that many of the older white males in the industry won't like to hear, so take this with a grain of salt from one young woman to another.

\- Don't go to IBM. The executive team are clocked out, the whole program is a mix of brilliant science and community work that ultimately just flounders while the execs try to sell education and consulting.

\- Go to a startup. The US, the UK, Singapore, Germany, France, Australia, etc, all have great quantum-related startups. The education and experience and sheer exposure to opportunity there will be greater than IBM. 

\- Google or Intel is a good choice for exposure to how big corporations work and access to resources if you're hungry enough to eat through all the politics to get at them. Harder to get into but arguably better pay and more career esteem down the line. Quantum startups after all love to pepper their pitch docs with the logos of where their team has worked.

\- This will be really contentious but don't bother with a PhD. It won't improve your earning potential, and the sheer length of time (and, trust me from experience, poverty) puts you behind. Quantum computing might still be realistically 5 to 10 years away from some kind of useful utility, but there's already plenty of non-PhD talent coming into engineering, UX/UI, product management, marketing, strategy, devops, etc like any other deep tech. Do a PhD only if you REALLY want to, because you don't NEED to, and if you talk to most PhDs (trust me) it didn't really lead to any massive revelation or glorious moment (sigh).

There's a lot of people working in "computing" who don't know how silicon chips work. There will be a majority of the industry working in quantum who aren't PhD-level experts in qubits or supercooling or algorithms. A workable education on those can be gained through training or on the job even, and both of those occur better outside of being another pale stale crusty at IBM who is basically cruising towards retirement.

Probably not much of the program is aimed at undergraduates, but you can attend the seminars to find out what kinds of research work is being done, and you can ask the faculty for career and coursework advice.  Professors love it when people ask them for advice.

I am a seasoned CPU design engineer  who wishes to be working in Quantum Computing area some day . I am continuing my self studies in Quantum computing , i also have a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Physics , which i feel will be useful. One thing i can say that having classical computing background definitely helps being financially viable until some breakthrough happens in Quantum Computing. So I’d agree with most people here that you can focus on your Computer engineering right now and on the side keep yourself updating and studying on quantum computing topics.

Computer engineer here… Stay the course, ur curriculum is going to focus on both EE and CS. If QC becomes viable in the future then peruse it further, if not u still have the option of falling back on ur hardware or software background. If I were u I’d focus more on the doing projects and internships on the software side of ur degree. It’s more versatile and more opportunities imo.

As others have already mentioned, just follow the curriculum for now. Play around with stuff like Qiskit if you like, maybe try to take an intro to QM course.

You will probably start to get a better sense of what you find interesting, as there are many aspects.  Material science/fabrication, circuit design, packaging, electronic control, classical coding layers, etc.

Echoing others, I'm a comp e going into my 3rd yr. Stick with ur circiculum, I'd love a career in this field too but it's a very new field with a lot of growing pains.

I'm currently learning army stuff on black opal and can't complain for the price I'm learning a lot. Learn it for the sake of curiosity and see how you feel about it, there's a lot of hype q-computing has rn and I wouldn't be surprised to see it skyrocket in next 2 years like IOT, web3, crypto and AI. 

Comp end is an amazing course to get you where you want and I love that your interested!, it teaches you the importance of low level computation and the functionality of what your working on while providing you the magmatic to branch to data science and software skills to work in dev!

Adding on to some of the previous comments here, I work in the QC industry NOT having come from a QC-research background. There's definitely opportunities to work in QC-adjacent fields (e.g. software development, design, product, etc.), where you're still contributing to the space, even if you're not necessarily doing the lab research. So definitely keep an open mind about how you can get into the industry. 

Also, some general career navigation advice that *really* helped me in HS/college:  I'd recommend also looking outside of your college courses to learn about the topics you're interested in. There are tons of subjects you don't get to learn through official university courses, and doing courses/self-taught research on your interests will help you figure out what you actually want to do with your career after you graduate.

PS as mentioned by someone else, you can get a head start learning QC with different resources online already. You can also check out [Black Opal](https://q-ctrl.com/black-opal) \-- it's a really great introductory course to QC, and it's actually one of the products my company works on :)

I'm not exactly sure what a degree in computer engineering is going to do for you if you want a career in quantum. Why not study something more relevant like physics, CS, EE, or even math? I've never met anyone with a computer engineering background in quantum. To my knowledge, a computer engineering isn't really going to focus on quantum computing, but since you're only in HS right now, I suppose this could change.

simply put, you are on the right track. you should continue your program at purdue for computer engineering. it's a good choice. your best bet is to do well in your classes as a freshmen, and then by your sophomore year it would be a good time to email professors (or students in their lab) involved in quantum research asking if you can join as an undergraduate researcher. i can't overstate how beneficial it is to get involved in the undergrad research, especially in this field. it is the most likely path towards any internship or good phd program after your degree.

All I know is that they currently look for and prefer people with MD's and PhD's unfortunately in this field, so you would have to get a Graduate Degree in the Quantum field with that.  


The average pay? Because it's currently PhD it's in the 100's thousands, but who know what the future will hold in 8 years. When I started Uni AI/Machine Learning was just starting out, now it's in full swing, we have to see what happens and how accessible it is to researchers.  


There is no regular pay, because there is no normal jobs for it yet.

Alice &amp; Bob are interesting. But there's so many to keep an eye on that are worth the effort to do so. Horizon Computing, Classiq Technologies, Quantum Brilliance, Q-CTRL, OQC, etc. 

The more specific question you ask is if there is any chance of a smaller venture competing with the entrenched FAANG companies? This is a fair question, as the SaaS and Cloud era saw greater monopolisation building up, which has arguably been on display in the current AI phase. Although the role of antitrust measures has forced some moves that otherwise wouldn't have occurred (e.g. Microsoft in Europe, acquihires rather than acquisition sprees, partnerships, etc). 

Quantum computing is a little different in the nature of emerging from regions with strong academic R&amp;D activity. This is fascinating to see, as you wouldn't otherwise expect Canada and Australia to be so high in the leadership of this area, along with the Swiss, German, French, etc. The nature of capital deployment accounts for the Seed to Series-A stages, with university resources giving way to government grants and funds/co-funding, and local venture capital. We've seen the sovereign funds kicking into gear as global VC moved to focus on AI, and it makes sense that governments would be investing into quantum given the rise of geopolitical tensions.

So that's some context, and you can imply that regions with good universities and quantum physics talent, along with government support of Deep Tech, have a certain pool of talent and potential. So let's look at the other side of the question. The existing companies. 

* Google - really interesting team that stays focused on their large-scale architecture and benefits towards AI and ML. 
* IBM - clever rebrand and repositioning around their System Two and laser focused on big business and fault tolerant (while building out their community moat).
* Microsoft - there's a lot of changes happening here right now, and the chatter here in Seattle points to a number of big moves being made, so stay tuned I guess.
* Meta - focused on other areas. 
* Apple - no idea, but I know a bunch of their AI management have left to join stealth quantum startups. 

  
As ever, the advantage startups have is speed, focus, and room to experiment or take risks outside of the larger organisational power dynamic. Some of my team when I was at Quantum Brilliance were formerly of IBM and while they still struggled to let go of "the old ways", they had absolutely incredible experiences we could draw from. The bar for Deep Tech startups is pretty high now, and the ability to lobby and do deals on the sovereign scale is impressive (see PsiQuantum's deals in Australia and Illinois). 

TLDR: IMHO the more interesting innovations will come from the startups, although I'm biased as I work for one, and the major FAANG companies are focused on very long term fault-tolerant scale. Expect the usual waves of startup shutdowns and layoffs over the next few years, and acquisitions to kick in as the landscape becomes clearer.

Quantum computing exists purely in research at the moment. Yes there are people working on applications and on hardware, but no one has an actual path towards long term profitability, including large companies. Saying "industry" is a huge misnomer, because these companies are not necessarily trying to market anything. 

The reason so many small companies exist is essentially because there is no real funding in academia. Being a R&amp;D dominated field, there are very few qualified people and those who are tend to have tenured positions at universities. Still, they need funding to the tune of millions of dollars to build a prototypes. Universities don't have the budget, so venture capitalists step in. 

The goal for the company is to own the technology that researchers come up with, and researchers need capital to fund experiments and so on. Startups are created so that some entity can own the patents and IP that researchers produce, in return for the funds to actually create the tech. There is huge value in solving problems that are preventing us from building fault tolerant quantum computers, even if the startup itself may or may not be the one to build it.

The short answer is "no" if you are interested in something that is useful for industry or society. However, one can discuss about the need to do basic and fundamental research before getting anything commercially useful. From this point of view, a lot of effort has been put and a lot of answers have been provided for problems that would be probably appealing for physicists mostly. I don't know what is your background and if you are interested.

- Related to the previous question, the technological progress has been huge. We are now able to realize and control very large quantum devices (up to thousands of qubits). This results has been possible thanks to both academia and industry, however the largest and most efficient ones are usually industrial platforms (QuEra,Google Quantum AI,IBM,IQM,Pasqal,DWave,...).   
  
- I am not aware of any notable advance if you are interested in something that could be considered useful for society.   
However, all the above mentioned companies (and many more), with the exception of QuEra and Google that have tight academic connections and do mostly fundamental research,  are focusing on  quantum solutions to problems that could be appealing to a broad audience (e.g. portfolio optimization, drug discovery, vehicule routing and so on)

Yes, though Alice and Bob don't have a working chip yet. (They require a string of 20+ Josephson junctions which is hard to manufacture)

But, so called "open stack" producers, are poised to outperform the full stack manufactures within 2 to 4 years. 

The reason is simple, and is apparent from every single modern day company too: specialization. By focusing on just 1 elemen of the stack, advancements are made much faster. For countries building up knowledge there is much more to gain from an open stack, than a closed stack. So national quantum computers are more likely to be open stack.

There is hundreds of start ups and scale ups, in different modalities, and different parts of the stack. If you can narrow that down I can give you some references
